A partnership between The Principle Trust and Three Nines Children’s Charity is continuing to provide practical support to families facing difficult circumstances.
These families include those living in and around Skipton and the wider Craven area.
Through the Working Together for Brighter Tomorrows campaign, the two charities recently supported a local family with a respite break following a challenging year.
The family, which included two children aged six and 13, their mother and a close relative, spent several days at one of Three Nines Children’s Charity’s coastal holiday homes.
The accommodation is designed to offer a calm, safe and familiar environment, giving families space to rest and reconnect away from everyday pressures.
As part of the support, the children also received toys and theatre tickets for a performance of The Wizard of Oz over the Christmas period.
The charities say these additional touches were intended to create positive experiences at a time when families dealing with trauma or emotional strain often have limited opportunities to do so.
During the break, the family took part in simple activities including walks on the beach, pumpkin picking and visiting a local farm.
For the youngest child, who is autistic, the quiet setting was particularly important, allowing her to relax at her own pace.
The children’s mum said the experience made a significant difference.
She explained:
“From what has been the most awful year in my forty years, some amazing memories were created with my children.
“It was a much-needed escape in what has been an extremely difficult time, and we were so grateful.”
She added that having support from her sister during the trip helped her feel more confident about travelling with the children in the future.
“Thank you so much for restoring smiles and happiness for us.
"It will never be forgotten,”
Three Nines Children’s Charity works with children and young people affected by crime, offering trauma-informed support to help them recover and rebuild confidence.
Its work includes confidential emotional support services, providing toys, and arranging respite breaks in partnership with organisations such as The Principle Trust.
Anne Campbell Gunn, Chief Executive of Three Nines Children’s Charity, said the impact of these breaks can be significant.
“What may seem like a short break to some can be utterly transformative for families living with the impact of trauma.
“This time away allowed them not just to rest, but to rediscover moments of joy and connection,”.
Mike Davies MBE, Founder of The Principle Trust, said respite breaks are a key part of the charity’s work.
“Every break represents hope.
“Every memory helps a child move forward with strength and reassurance.
“Together with partners like Three Nines Children’s Charity, we remain committed to supporting families who need time, space and compassion while navigating very real challenges,”.
Both charities say they aim to continue supporting families across North Yorkshire, including Skipton, by offering opportunities that help children and parents regain confidence and stability during difficult periods.
