Brooklands school visit Skipton Hospital to learn the importance of nurses

Aspen class with nurses.

Aspen class from Brooklands School paid a special visit to Skipton Hospital last week.

The school work around big questions every half term to enhance their learning, and this half term’s question to answer was “Why was Florence Nightingale special?”

That led the school to connect with Airedale’s community nurses, to help bring the task to life.

The main focus was understanding why Florence Nightingale and other nurses are so special, with an additional benefit of overcoming any hospital anxieties that any of the children might have.

Airedale’s Community Specialist Nursing Team spent time with the children showing what they do and the children tried on uniforms, helped make teddies better with bandages and dressings, used blood pressure machines, stethoscopes, and blood test equipment.

Helen Halliwell from the community nursing team at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust says:

“The visit was a really important way to show these children why nurses are so special and that hospitals are not scary places and the people who work there are very nice and just want to help them.”

Suzanne Nunn, Aspen Class Leader at Brooklands School says:

“We want to say a heartfelt thanks for all the hard work the team all put in to helping our pupils learn these valuable real-life experiences.

"The children have now made thank you cards in school to show what it meant to them.

"We’re so very grateful.”
