Skipton MP calls for National Insurance cut to support hospitality jobs

Minister for the Future of Work Kate Dearden acknowledged the role hospitality plays in providing routes into employment for younger people.

Skipton and Ripon MP Sir Julian Smith has called on the Government to consider cutting National Insurance costs for hospitality businesses to help them employ more young people.

The Conservative MP raised the issue in the House of Commons, highlighting the importance of pubs, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality businesses as employers of young people in areas including Skipton.

Sir Julian said:

“As the Minister knows, in areas like mine, the hospitality sector provides the bulk of employment for young people.

“Can I urge her to look at the Opposition Front Benchers’ proposals, and proposals from UKHospitality, for a lower NICs rate to be provided at the upcoming Budget, to allow those businesses to employ more young people?”

Minister for the Future of Work Kate Dearden acknowledged the role hospitality plays in providing routes into employment for younger people.

She said:

“Hospitality, as he mentioned, is an absolute key employer of young people in the economy, providing rewarding routes into work.

“It is a critical sector to help us resolve the NEETs—not in education, employment or training—crisis.

"That is a key priority for this Government, and we want to work closely with the sector on providing those solutions.”

The Government has also announced a partnership with hospitality businesses aimed at providing up to 100,000 work placements for young people aged between 18 and 24 who are not in education, employment or training.

Ministers say other support for hospitality includes business rates relief for pubs, clubs and live music venues and a £10million hospitality grant scheme.
