A Skipton fish and chip shop has been named among the five best newcomers in the UK at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2027.
Yorkies, which opened on Skipton High Street earlier this year, has been shortlisted for the Newcomer of the Year award.
It is the only Yorkshire business among the five contenders, alongside fish and chip shops from Kent, Lincolnshire, Suffolk and Wales.
The category is open to businesses which have entered the fish and chip industry since January 2025, with entrants assessed on much more than the food they serve.
The judging process includes interviews, cooking demonstrations, taste tests and mystery shopping, as well as looking at areas including product knowledge, business practices, sustainability and health and safety.
The National Fish & Chip Awards are organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers and have been recognising businesses in the industry since 1988.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said:
“New entrants are part of the lifeblood of the fish and chip trade and their entrance into the business is vital for our future prosperity.”
Yorkies will now face another round of judging as the five shortlisted businesses are reduced to three finalists.
The eventual Newcomer of the Year winner will be announced at the National Fish & Chip Awards ceremony at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London on Wednesday 24th February 2027.
