Skipton man takes on 100-mile challenge following brother’s Huntington’s diagnosis

A Skipton businessman is taking on a 100-mile running challenge to raise money and awareness after his younger brother was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease.

Matthew Oxley is aiming to run 100 miles throughout October in aid of the Huntington’s Disease Association, inspired by his brother Michael Oxley, from Skipton, who was diagnosed with the condition early last year at the age of 39.

Matthew has already completed 64 miles of the challenge and raised more than £2,260.

The challenge follows a major personal fitness journey for Matthew, who weighed almost 19 stone in June and has since lost more than three-and-a-half stone while training for the fundraiser.

He has been fitting his running around managing MJL Groundworks & Civils Ltd, a local business operating in the Skipton and Otley areas.

Huntington’s disease is an inherited condition which progressively affects the brain, impacting movement, thinking and behaviour.

There is currently no cure.

Matthew said:

“Seeing someone close to you face something like this gives you a very different perspective and is the reason I want to do something positive to help raise awareness and funds.”

With more than half of the distance now completed, Matthew is hoping further donations will help support the work of the Huntington’s Disease Association as he pushes towards the 100-mile target.

Donations can be made through Matthew’s JustGiving fundraising page here.
