MP receives response from Arla Foods regarding Settle Creamery

Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has received a response from Arla Foods regarding the future of the Settle creamery, following his persistent efforts to secure a positive outcome for the local community and workers affected by the proposed closure.

In his letter dated April 29, 2025, Julian wrote to Arla CEO Peder Tuborgh and expressed his profound disappointment and frustration over Arla's decision to close the Settle creamery.

He highlighted the extensive efforts made by various stakeholders, including North Yorkshire Council, the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, and the GMB union, to find viable alternatives that would allow the creamery to continue operations and contribute to the local economy.

Arla Foods, in their response dated May 7, 2025, acknowledged Sir Julian's concerns and outlined their ongoing engagement with stakeholders.

Arla's Managing Director, Bas Padberg, emphasised that while the original business case for closure remains, the company is open to exploring alternative uses for the Settle site during the transition period.

These alternatives include producing a different Arla product or repurposing the site as a training facility, as suggested by the Combined Authority.

Commenting, Julian stated,

"My priority remains the well-being of the workers, and I will continue to advocate for measures that ensure workers receive the necessary support they need as the process continues."
