Two Keighley teenagers have been handed suspended prison sentences after luring a classmate to a Skipton park before threatening him with a knife, beating him and stealing more than £800.
Zain Khan, of Kendal Mellor Court, and Nahid Ali, of Oakworth Road, both aged 19, were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Friday (7th August) following the attack at Aireville Park.
The victim was a student at Craven College in Skipton and believed Khan, who was also a student there, to be his friend.
On 6th March 2024, the pair went to the college café before Khan suggested they walk to Morrisons to buy food.
During the walk, Khan produced a machete-type knife and forced the victim into woodland at Aireville Park, where they were met by Ali.
The victim was then kicked and punched several times and had a knife held to his throat, leaving him fearing for his life.
The attack was filmed and shared on social media, with footage showing the victim with a knife held to his throat eventually reaching his mother.
During the robbery, the teenagers took the victim's phone and ordered him to open his banking app.
Fearing for his life, he transferred a large amount of money into Khan's bank account.
The victim was then made to contact a friend, who transferred further money for him to hand over to Khan.
More than £800 was stolen in total.
The victim required hospital treatment for injuries including haematomas to his head, temples and eye sockets, facial swelling, bruising across his body and abnormal breathing.
Investigating officer Detective Constable David Hunton said:
“Our thoughts remain with the victim in this case who has not only suffered physically, but was left traumatised and unable to leave his own home at one point. I hope this outcome provides some closure for him and his family.
“It is hard to comprehend what went through the defendants’ heads when they decided to carry out this terrifying and humiliating attack."
Both defendants pleaded guilty to the offences.
Khan was sentenced to two years for robbery and a concurrent nine months for possession of a knife, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work.
Ali received a 20-month sentence for robbery, also suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
Both were also given rehabilitation activity requirements.
Two other teenagers involved in the attack were dealt with at an earlier hearing and ordered to pay compensation.
Detective Constable David Hunton said:
“They clearly planned it in advance and were not only content to violently attack their victim, but thought it was acceptable to film it and share it on social media.
“They have gone from college students straight into the criminal justice system as convicted and violent offenders.
"I hope they realise the gravity of their actions and get some help to take a different path from the appalling criminal one they have chosen.”
