Staff at Castleberg Hospital in Settle have helped an 87-year-old military veteran reconnect with his past after arranging a special presentation of regimental keepsakes.
George 'John' Grubb, from Glusburn, served in the Parachute Regiment with the Royal Artillery but had lost his treasured beret and other military memorabilia over the years.
The items held great sentimental value for John and his family, representing an important part of his military service.
Determined to help, his consultant at Castleberg Hospital, Dr Sarah Stowe, contacted the Parachute Regimental Association to see whether replacements could be arranged.
Members of the association responded by organising a special visit to the hospital last week.
David Webster and Gary Teal, from the association's West Yorkshire branch, visited John and presented him with a new maroon beret, pennant and certificate.
The presentation gave John the opportunity to once again wear the distinctive beret associated with the airborne forces.
Hospital staff, fellow patients and John's family were delighted to see him receive the items, which restored an important connection to his military past.
Helen Mace, Castleberg Hospital Team Leader, said:
“We were so pleased to be able to help John.
“It was an emotional but uplifting visit for us all.
"The presentation meant a great deal to him and it was wonderful to see the smile on his face when he received his beret.”
The visit was made possible through the efforts of hospital staff and members of the Parachute Regimental Association, who worked together to recognise John's service and replace his treasured keepsakes.
