Skipton MP backs tougher social media restrictions for under-16s

Sir Julian Smith MP is campaigning for stronger action on social media usage.

Skipton MP Sir Julian Smith has reiterated his support for Government plans to ban children under 16 from using social media.

The restrictions are expected to come into force in spring 2027 and cover major platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, X and YouTube.

Messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal are not expected to be included.

Sir Julian said:

“Many parents across our area have contacted me with the same concern: the impact of social media on their children.

“That’s why I’ve been campaigning so hard at Westminster alongside my Conservative colleagues to force the Government to implement a ban on social media for under 16’s.

“I’m pleased that they have now made that commitment but there’s so much more to look at.”

Sir Julian said he would continue campaigning for stronger action to reduce the harm caused by addictive online platforms.
