Skipton RFC has announced the death of one of its first team players, Bill Bevan, at the age of just 25.
In a statement, the club said it was 'extremely saddened' to announce the news of Bill's passing, following a 'tragic accident'.
Coach Declan Hayes said:
"He was a great young man. Just 25 years old but 'old school' in a way you wouldn't expect for someone his age.
"He always made everyone smile when they spoke with him.
"A true gentleman, intelligent, thoughtful, funny; a lad who no doubt made his family proud.
"We will miss him greatly."
Hundreds of tributes have been shared on social media posts to Bill, who was a much loved member of the team.
In a statement, Grassington-based Wharfedale RUFC said:
"It is with great sadness and regret that we report that Bill Bevan, 25 years old, of Skipton RUFC and a former Green, has lost his life whilst fishing in Scotland.
"Our thoughts are very much with Bill’s family and all at Skipton. The Bevan family has a substantial association with ‘Dale through both playing and refereeing.
"There will be a minute’s silence in memory of Bill before Saturday’s first XV fixture at Otley. RIP."
North Ribblesdale RUFC posted:
"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Bill’s family and friends along with teammates, and everyone at Skipton RUFC during this difficult time."
Another local club - Ilkley RFC - said in a comment:
"Very sad to hear this about clearly a top lad. Gone far too soon. Condolences to family, friends and all at Skipton RFC."
While Keighley RUFC said:
"Everyone at Keighley RUFC is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Skipton RFC player, Bill Bevan.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Bill’s family, his friends, and everyone at Skipton RFC during this incredibly difficult time. The whole rugby community stands with you in grief and support."
