Schools and community groups in Skipton are being encouraged to apply for funding through Tesco’s community grant scheme.
The grant awards of up to £1,500 for projects supporting children and young people’s access to healthy food.
The scheme invites applications from organisations running initiatives such as breakfast clubs, holiday food programmes, youth group snack provision, community pantries, cookery and nutrition sessions, and food growing projects that help children learn more about where food comes from.
Shortlisted projects are put forward to a public vote in participating Tesco stores.
Customers receive a blue token at checkout and can cast their vote in-store for one of three local causes.
Funding is then allocated based on the number of votes each project receives.
The retailer says it is particularly interested this year in projects with a clear focus on improving access to nutritious food.
Recent national diet survey figures indicate that fewer than one in ten young people aged 11 to 18 meet the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, with average consumption below that level.
Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said:
“Every child deserves the chance to enjoy healthy food and build the foundations for a healthier future.
“We want to support the schools and community groups in Skipton helping children and young people access nutritious food.
“Whether that’s a breakfast club, a pantry, cookery sessions or a project that helps children grow and try new foods, we’d encourage local organisations to apply, and we’d also encourage shoppers to take part in the customer vote when it launches in their local store.”
Further information about the Tesco Stronger Starts grant programme and details on how to apply can be found on the Tesco website.
