North Yorkshire Council plans six-week school summer holiday in 2027/28

North Yorkshire Council has published draft school term dates for the next academic year.

School children in North Yorkshire will get a six-week summer holiday next year — a week less than this year’s seven-week break.

North Yorkshire Council has published draft school term dates for the 2027/28 academic year, setting out proposed holiday periods and teacher training days for schools across the county.

Under the plans, the autumn term would begin on Wednesday, September 1, 2027, following the summer break which starts on Friday, July 23.

Pupils would then break up for October half-term on Friday, October 22 and return to school on Monday, November 1.

The Christmas holidays would begin after schools close on Friday, December 17, with pupils returning on Tuesday, January 4, 2028.

During the spring term, the February half-term break is scheduled to run from Monday, February 14 to Friday, February 18. Schools would then break up for Easter on Friday, April 7, with pupils returning on Monday, April 24.

The summer term would begin after the Easter holidays and include a half-term break from Monday, May 29 to Friday, June 2. The academic year would end on Friday, July 28, 2028.

The proposed calendar includes 195 school days, five of which are designated as professional development days for staff.

Three PD days would be set by the council, while individual schools would be able to choose the remaining two training days and would be expected to inform parents of those arrangements.

The draft dates have been published as part of North Yorkshire Council’s planning for the 2027/28 school year to help schools, families and transport providers prepare for the academic calendar.

The proposed term dates cover maintained schools across North Yorkshire, although academies retain the power to set their own calendars and may choose to adopt different arrangements.
