Bolton Abbey footpath set for temporary closure

A section of the main path at Strid Woods on the Bolton Abbey estate will be shut for two days next week while a number of trees are removed.

The affected area is the footpath between the Cavendish Pavilion and the Strid (on the west bank) - which will be closed on Tuesday 30th September and Wednesday 1st October.

The 'top' woodland footpaths will remain open.

Bolton Abbey estate says the closure will be in place while the forestry team remove many of the ash trees that have been affected by Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) a disease that was discovered back in 2012 and is predicted to infect and kill 80-90% of all ash trees.

A spokesperson said:

"It is important the work is complete to ensure we keep visitors safe and the woodland footpaths open."

The larger timber that’s removed will be processed as firewood and the smaller timber will be left to degrade, providing ecological value to the woodland.

Heavy machinery, including a harvester, will be operating in the area so visitors are asked to adhere to all signage that will be in place to re-route them during the closure.
