North Yorkshire Council is set to introduce parking restrictions on four roads in Skipton as part of the town's £7.2m Gateway scheme.
Ahead of building work getting underway in the summer, the council has proposed painting double yellow lines on sections of Carleton Street, Gas Street, Cross Street and Craven Street, as well as introducing a one-way system on Carleton Street.
Conservative executive member for transport Keane Duncan is expected to approve the Traffic Regulation Orders on Monday following a public consultation.
The overall project, which is being funded by the government, will create a path connection from the railway station to the Cattle Mart and college, and improve the walking route to the bus station, along Black Walk, including the replacement of Gallows Bridge.
The scheme has been reduced from its original vision which would have seen an overhaul of Skipton railway station.
A planned reconfiguration of the station’s car park was scrapped last year as was pedestrian improvements to Broughton Road.
The proposals also included a cycle lane from the station to the town centre but this was scrapped in 2021 after concerns were raised over the safety of cyclists and loss of a taxi rank.
One resident who responded to the consultation said restricting vehicles from stopping on Carleton Street could make parking in other parts of the town worse.
They said: “I have concerns that the waiting restrictions on the left-hand side of Carleton St will result in displacement of vehicles to other nearby areas and may well generate other objections.”
This week, Cllr Duncan published an update about the county’s three gateway schemes ahead of a meeting of North Yorkshire Council in Northallerton next week.
He said: “Final works pricing is currently in progress by contract partners prior to a final approval stage, with work expected to commence in Skipton in the summer and Harrogate and Selby later in the year.”
