Skipton landmarks light up purple for World Polio Day

Holy Trinity Church, Skipton

Skipton landmarks have been lit up in purple this week to mark World Polio Day and raise awareness of the global effort to eradicate the disease.

Holy Trinity Church and Skipton Town Hall were illuminated as part of the Purple for Polio campaign, which is supported by Rotary clubs across the world, including Skipton Rotary.

The colour purple represents the dye used to mark the fingers of children who have been immunised against polio.

Rotary International has been at the forefront of the fight to end polio for more than three decades, working alongside organisations such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, cases have been reduced by more than 99 percent worldwide.

A spokesperson for Skipton Rotary said:

“Polio remains a threat in a few parts of the world, but the progress made so far shows what can be achieved when communities unite behind a shared goal.

"Lighting up our local landmarks is a small way to show support and raise awareness of this important cause.”

World Polio Day is held annually on 24th October to recognise progress in the fight against the disease and to encourage continued vaccination efforts until polio is eliminated globally.
