Care home introduces new exhibition creating a new perspective on Dementia

Springbank Care Home in Silsden

The North and West Yorkshire care group in Silsden have announced their innovative exhibition.

Springbank Care Home will hold its “Through Our Eyes” exhibition on Friday, 6th March, from 2pm to 4pm.

The event marks the completion of a project that uses digital technology to combine present-day portraits of residents living with dementia with images from earlier in their lives.

Rather than displaying past and present photographs separately, the project blends them into a single image, placing residents as they are today into scenes from their earlier years.

The team say the aim is to highlight each individual’s life story and experiences.

The exhibition will bring the images together as part of a training resource for staff and visiting professionals.

The home says the visual approach is intended to support a greater understanding of residents’ personal histories and identities, helping to inform day-to-day care.

External professionals and organisations connected to the care sector have been invited to attend to learn more about the initiative.

Representatives from local businesses and schools where residents previously worked have also been invited as part of efforts to reconnect individuals with their professional backgrounds and the wider community.

April Howie, who led the project, said:

“This project has been a deeply moving journey for everyone involved.

"By merging the present with the past, we aren’t just creating art; we are creating a powerful tool for empathy that reminds us all of the incredible lives our residents have led.

"It has been a privilege to bring these stories to life in such a visual way, and we are excited to share the culmination of this work with our colleagues and the local community to show the person behind the diagnosis.”

To protect residents’ privacy, the original composite photographs will not be shared publicly.

The exhibition is invitation-only, although the home has said it welcomes enquiries from those in the care sector or local community who would like to find out more.
