The spirit of festive competition and culinary excellence was on full display as Spellman Care successfully hosted its highly anticipated Annual Christmas Cake Competition for 2025.
This cherished yearly event brought together the talented chefs from all four Spellman Care homes, with the judging panel composed entirely of the group's discerning residents.
This year's competition was proudly hosted at Steeton Court Nursing Home, and the residents’ votes have officially crowned a new champion.
The event was formally opened by Spellman Care Director Steven Spellman, setting a festive tone for the day. Singer Craig Carlisle hosted the proceedings, ensuring a lively and entertaining atmosphere, while the awards were announced later in the afternoon by Operations Manager Philippa Young.

The day was a resounding success, filled with community spirit and magnificent baking displays.
Crucially, the competition placed a significant emphasis on inclusivity and adaptability, reflecting Spellman Care’s commitment to ensuring every resident is involved and catered for.
The chefs were tasked with not only creating a showstopper cake but also providing high-quality, delicious alternatives that met various dietary, allergy, and texture-modified requirements.
This focus ensured that all residents, regardless of their specific needs, could participate fully in the tasting and judging process, highlighting how important it is to the organisation that everyone be involved.
The creativity and dedication to these modified aspects were clear across the board: Springbank presented a beautiful Poinsettia-themed cake, complete with a separate gluten and dairy-free alternative. Ghyll Royd showcased a deeply poignant 'Tranquillity in Hostility' cake, inspired by the WWI Christmas truce, accompanied by an impressive IDDSI Level 3 (moderately thick/liquidised) gingerbread man alternative.
The residents, serving as the official judges, thoroughly enjoyed the difficult task of selecting the winner. Craven Nursing Home secured the Runner-Up spot with their magnificent, detailed gingerbread village and an accompanying vegan alternative. A huge congratulations to Trevor, Jake, and the entire Craven Nursing Home kitchen team!
Steeton Court Nursing Home were 'chuffed' to take home the trophy with their incredible, highly festive 'Spellman Express' steam train cake. The winning display was a true testament to baking skill and inclusivity, as it also featured a perfect, high-quality IDDSI Level 5 (minced and moist) alternative.
Philippa Young, Spellman Care’s Operations Manager, commented,
"What a fantastic day and what a way to kick off the festive season! This event truly embodies the heart of our community. The commitment shown by our chefs to the modified bakes was outstanding. It is hugely important to us that every single resident feels involved and is able to enjoy the festive fun safely, regardless of dietary requirements or texture needs. We were thrilled that every resident in attendance could participate in the tasting and judging thanks to this dedication. We extend a massive thank you to every single person who made the day possible—from our incredible chefs and the hosting kitchen team at Steeton Court, to our Activity Coordinators, Housekeeping Team, and the Minibus and WAV drivers who ensured our residents could attend safely. These wonderful events simply wouldn't be possible without the support and dedication of every member of the Spellman Care community.
