Skipton boy wins Pride of Britain award

12 year old Luke Mortimer from Embsay has been given a Pride of Britain award and will feature on ITV later this week.

He's been awarded the 'Child of Courage' award following his fundraising efforts to help other children with disabilities.

To break the exciting news to him was Hollywood star, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, who surprised him at Luke's hotel after a day out with his dad.

In 2019, Luke lost all his limbs after contracting meningococcal meningitis septicaemia.

Aftter 23 operations, he eventually went home but his life had changed forever.

In 2023 Luke climbed 656ft to the summit of Embsay Crag, raising more than £26,000 for charities including LimbPower and Children in Need.

A year later, Luke‘s dad joined a team of 19 to climb the National Three Peaks and Yorkshire Three Peaks in under 46 hours.

Luke, Mum Christine, and brother Harry, 15, climbed the final mountain, Pen-y-ghent, where they met the rest of the group on the summit.

The family raised £20,000 to help fund prosthetics for Luke and help other children with amputations through the Amp Camp Kids charity.

Luke is determined to keep doing challenges to raise even more money.

The Pride of Britain Awards will take place this Thursday and can be watched on ITV at 8pm.
