The Social Run Club in Skipton is inviting local residents to take part in a special evening run later this month to highlight women’s safety during the darker months.
The event, taking place on Wednesday 29 October, supports the national This Girl Can campaign and aims to raise awareness of how shorter days can affect when and where women feel comfortable exercising. Research from the campaign shows that nearly three-quarters of women adjust their running routines during winter because they do not feel safe running in the dark. The Skipton run, called Let’s Lift the Curfew, will follow a 5k loop through the town, starting outside Jetts Gym at 6pm. Participants are encouraged to wear bright or neon clothing to stay visible and show support for the cause. A spokesperson for The Social Run Club said: “This run is about coming together as a community and creating a visible show of support for women who feel unsafe running alone. "Everyone is welcome, all abilities are encouraged, and no one will be left behind.” The This Girl Can campaign, developed by Sport England, aims to break down barriers that prevent women and girls from being active. It encourages people to challenge the social and environmental factors that limit participation in sport and exercise.
