Airedale Hospital and Community Charity’s second 12-hour CPR-a-thon returned to Morrisons Skipton on Saturday 27 September where 736 people got involved.
The CPR-a-thon saw teams and individuals attempt to perform CPR non-stop for 12 hours in a bid to raise awareness of the life-saving skill.
CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is an emergency procedure that consists of chest compressions to a person in cardiac arrest to keep blood pumping around the body until emergency services arrive.
With the support of Westbrook Decorators Limited, the charity team were also able to introduce a CPR roadshow to 9 schools in the run up to the CPR-a-thon. Children from the schools were sponsored to perform continuous CPR and all together raised an incredible £3,892.82.
Carla Weatherall, Charity Fundraiser said:
“This year, we attempted to reach even more people from our local communities and primary schools from the Skipton and Keighley districts were more than happy to get involved.
“Including our CPR roadshow, an amazing 1,926 people performed continuous CPR for 21 hours, 16 minutes and 28 seconds with the help of team members from Airedale NHS Foundation Trust’s Emergency Department.”
The £6,102 raised from the CPR roadshow and 12-hour CPR-a-thon has brought the Emergency Department Appeal total even closer to the £150,000 target. The total is now standing at £117, 494.
Jodie Hearnshaw, Charity Manager added:
“This years’ CPR-a-thon has been an incredible success, and our heartfelt thanks goes out to Morrisons in Skipton for allowing us to host this event for the second year and to Alex from Your Skipton radio, Craven College, Embsay Scouts and Keighley and Craven Athletics Club for joining us on the day.
“This event has been the perfect showing of communities coming together, raising awareness of the life-saving skill that we never know when might be needed.”
