Rivers of Italy

Paola Lerza, a long-standing friend of Skipton’s Italian circle who lives in Genoa but often visits Skipton, will be giving a talk (in English) on “Rivers of Italy”. Paola explains:
“Being a mountainous country, Italy doesn't have many long rivers: most of them are only seasonal streams. However, three of them - the Po, the Arno and the Tiber - deserve to be mentioned for their both geographical and historical relevance, having played a fundamental role in shaping Italian civilization, economy, culture and society.
“Where there are rivers there are bridges: a river is not an obstacle if there is a bridge which allows you to cross it. Some of the bridges on these rivers are relevant for communications, some others are masterpieces of architecture.
“Nowadays, when shortages of water seem to be a serious problem especially for the south of Europe, knowing a bit more about the importance of rivers might be more vital than ever.”

As usual the talk will begin at 8 pm, with refreshments – Italian wine, tea and coffee – available from 7.30. Entrance free to members, £5 for non-members. All are welcome – come and make new friends while learning about all things Italian!
