A long-established independent business in Skipton has entered a new chapter after being taken over by two local sisters.
Craven Stationery, based on Coach Street, has been acquired by Annie Clay and Viki Smith-McShee from Richard Mashiter, whose family has owned and run the stationery and printing shop for more than 30 years.
The new owners say they are committed to maintaining the friendly service the business is known for while introducing new ideas, including an expanded range of stationery and office supplies, improvements to the shop and a redesigned website to make online shopping easier.
Customers will continue to see familiar faces in-store, with the pair aiming to build on the business' reputation while broadening its appeal both locally and further afield.
Annie and Viki said:
"We’re incredibly excited to be taking the helm of one of Skipton’s most well-known independent businesses. Over the years, Craven Stationery has become an essential service for many loyal customers and we are committed to ensuring that continues under our ownership.
"We’ve already introduced some exciting changes and are looking forward to creating a business that honours its heritage while embracing innovation and evolving to meet the needs of today’s customers.
"Skipton is a thriving market town with a fantastic independent business community that relies on many of the services we provide.
"As well as those businesses, and alongside local residents who use our photocopying/printing services and regularly buy stationery, we also welcome visitors who browse the shop and enjoy our historic canal wharf location.
"We’re excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to seeing the business continue to grow and prosper."
Richard Mashiter reflected on his family's time running the business and explained why he decided it was the right time to hand it over.
He said:
"In 2003, when my son Jonathan, who founded Craven Stationery, suggested he was considering selling the business, it coincided with my retirement from a successful banking career. For my wife Deborah and I, taking over and growing the business together was the perfect opportunity.
"Sadly, following Deborah’s untimely death last year, I, along with her sister Hayley Smith, a partner in the business since 2018, knew it was time to pass the baton on.
"Having known Annie & Viki’s family for many years and employed Annie over the past 12 months, I am confident that Craven Stationery is in safe hands.
"Their enthusiasm, commitment and vision will ensure the business remains a valued part of Skipton and the wider local economy for many years to come."
The sisters say they plan to build on the foundations laid by the Mashiter family, with continued investment in the shop's products, services and online offering.
