Woodland work underway to boost wildlife at Damems trail

The work at Damems is designed to improve biodiversity.

Work is underway at Damems Woodland Trail to create new habitats and encourage a greater variety of wildlife.

Visitors may have noticed areas of the woodland have recently been cut back as part of plans to create a new woodland ride.

A woodland ride is an open corridor running through an area of woodland, allowing more sunlight to reach the ground and creating better conditions for plants, insects, birds and other wildlife.

The work at Damems is designed to improve biodiversity while also helping with the long-term management of the woodland.

Wildflower seeds will be sown along the margins of the new ride, providing additional sources of food for pollinators including bees and butterflies.

The combination of open areas, wildflowers and woodland-edge habitats is also expected to help connect different habitats across the site.

Those behind the project said the changes will take time to develop but should ultimately create a "richer and more varied woodland environment" at Damems.
