Oxfam in Skipton is encouraging local residents to donate unwanted clothes and shop pre-loved this September as part of the charity’s Second Hand September campaign.
The charity shop on Swadford Street is hoping for a busy month of donations and is asking people to consider passing on clothes they have not worn for the past year.
The campaign aims to encourage people to make more sustainable fashion choices by giving clothes a longer life and reducing textile waste.
Emily Tysoe, Oxfam Manager in Skipton, said charity shops have an important role to play in tackling the impact of fast fashion.
She said:
“We love welcoming our regular customers and people dropping in donations, but this September we’d also love to see some new faces through the door.
“There are more ways than ever to shop second hand, but there’s still something special about browsing a charity shop.
"You never quite know what you’re going to find, and that’s part of the fun.”
Actor Richard E. Grant is also supporting this year’s campaign, appearing on Oxfam posters across Yorkshire and encouraging people to discover second-hand fashion and give unwanted clothing a longer life.
Oxfam has been selling pre-loved fashion since 1947 and says donations to its local shops help support the charity’s work.
Rachel Cosgrove-Pearce, Oxfam’s Head of Retail Operations, said September is a particularly important time for the charity’s shops as they look to keep their rails stocked with good-quality clothing.
She said:
“By donating clothes you no longer wear or choosing to shop second hand, you’re helping to reduce textile waste, support Oxfam’s work and do something positive for the planet.”
People in Skipton are being encouraged to visit the Oxfam shop on Swadford Street during September, whether to donate unwanted clothing or browse its selection of pre-loved items.
