Skipton MP receives update on Airedale Hospital plans

New Airedale Hospital plans.

Sir Julian Smith MP met with Foluke Ajayi, Chief Executive of Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, to discuss the next stage of plans for the new Airedale Hospital.

The Trust are launching its preplanning consultation on the outline design on Thursday 4th June.

The meeting follows Julian’s previous discussion with the Trust in March, where he received an update on progress, safety work relating to RAAC, and early preparation for the rebuild.

Since then, plans have continued to develop, with the project now moving into a key phase where the public will be able to view and comment on the proposed design.

Details of the hospital's plans can be found in a letter to Julian here and the leaflet can be seen here.

In the letter, the Trust shared that the new hospital will support changes in how care is provided, including expanding same day emergency care, reducing the need for some hospital stays, providing more procedures in outpatient settings, and improving privacy, dignity and accessibility for patients and visitors.

It will also sit alongside our continued work with health and care partners to provide more services and integrated care from community settings.

They shared the new hospital will have a state-of-the-art design with single en-suite rooms, bright communal spaces and healing views.

The new design will have features to making it as quick and easy as possible for people to get the care they need and reducing the time they need to be in hospital.

It will also improve patient comfort more space for patients, carers and visitors as well as single en-suite rooms for all patients to reduce the risk of infection, protect their privacy and dignity and get better rest so they can go home quicker.

The hospital will use new digital systems and technology, such as falls detection monitors, to help improve patient care and enable patients to return home as quickly as possible.

Commenting after the meeting, Julian said,

“It was very helpful to meet again with Foluke as this important project continues to move forward.

"Since my last meeting with the Trust in March, it is clear that progress has been made towards bringing forward detailed plans for a new Airedale Hospital.

"I recognise the complexities of delivering a new hospital on the existing site while services continue to operate, and the importance of doing so as quickly as possible.

"I am pleased with the focus on modern design, new technology, and improving patient experience, as well as the care being taken to reflect the views of local communities and minimise the impact on nearby residents."
