Silsden care home launches appeal for handmade clothes protectors

Springbank Care Home, on Howden Road, has launched the community appeal for more discreet and dignified alternatives to traditional clothes protectors worn during meals and drinks.

A Silsden care home is calling on local crafters and sewers to help create handmade clothes protectors for its residents.

The protectors are made by upcycling pre-loved garments such as colourful blouses, patterned shirts and tops, allowing them to look more like part of a resident's outfit.

They are created using the front panel of a garment, retaining features such as collars, necklines and buttons, before being lined with a soft, washable backing.

The initiative began with a donation from Wendy Brown, who created a collection of handmade clothes protectors for residents at Springbank.

Her designs included floral blouses, colourful garments and a black-and-white daisy print design.

Lisa Pickles, Home Manager at Springbank Care Home, said:

“We are so grateful to Wendy for her wonderful donation, which has already made such a positive difference for our residents.

“Preserving dignity and independence during mealtimes is so important, and these beautiful clothes protectors allow residents to enjoy their meals comfortably without compromising on personal style.

“We would love to welcome more donations from kind-hearted members of our local community who enjoy sewing or upcycling.”

Springbank is now inviting people across the local area to create their own protectors or donate suitable materials, including blouses, patterned shirts and soft washable backing fabrics.

Donations can be dropped off at Springbank Care Home on Howden Road in Silsden.

Springbank is part of Spellman Care, a family-run care group which has operated locally for more than 35 years.
