The Swan have retained their title as Addingham Village Quiz champions after another evening of competition at Addingham Memorial Hall.

The village quiz returned on Saturday evening for its second year since being revived, with 12 teams taking part in three hours of competition.

The Swan, who won last year's inaugural event, defeated Addingham Civic Society 25-14 in the final to secure back-to-back victories.

However, Civic Society proved to be the surprise package of the evening.

After being knocked out in the first round last year, the team went into this year's competition unseeded before beating The Co-Op and then producing one of the night's biggest upsets with a 21-3 quarter-final victory over last year's runners-up, Addingham Pantomime Group.

Civic Society continued their run with a 25-5 semi-final win against Addingham Scouts, before eventually losing out to The Swan in the final.

The Swan had also enjoyed a strong route to the final, beating Addingham Singers 19-11 in the quarter-finals before defeating newcomers Addingham Village Social Club 27-15 in the semi-final.

There were plenty of other surprises during the competition, with newcomers Addingham Singers knocking out Addingham Bowling Club in the opening round.

Addingham Beer Festival also put in a strong performance, scoring 25 points in the first round before narrowly losing to Addingham Scouts in the quarter-finals.

The evening also raised money for local causes, with the Beer Festival bar, pie and peas supplied by the Lord Addingham and a charity raffle helping to raise more than £500 for the Beer Festival Charity Fund.

The final figure is still to be confirmed.

Quiz host Mark Gregory, who brought the event back last year after a 20-year absence, said the evening had been a success.

He said:

“It was a fantastic night the room was full and the atmosphere brilliant from start to finish.

"Civic Society were outstanding and fully deserved their place in the final.

"The Swan were worthy champions, but everyone played their part in making it a special evening for the village.”

The event also highlighted a piece of Addingham quiz history.

The original quiz ran from 1990, with the runners-up from its early years recorded on the original trophy, although the winners have not yet been identified.
