North Yorkshire residents urged to recycle more household waste

Residents across North Yorkshire are being encouraged to check that recyclable household items are being placed in the correct containers.

The appeal has been issued by North Yorkshire Council during Recycle Week, which runs from Monday 14th until Sunday 20th September.

Households in the county currently recycle more than 42 per cent of their waste, but the council says many recyclable items still end up in rubbish bins.

Items which can be recycled at the kerbside across North Yorkshire include paper, cardboard, magazines, envelopes, food and drink cartons, cans, empty aerosols, aluminium foil and food trays.

Plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and tubes can also be recycled, alongside glass bottles and jars and clean plastic plant pots which are not black.

Wrapping paper and greetings cards can be recycled unless they contain glitter or foil.

North Yorkshire Council Leader Cllr Carl Les said:

“Every year, billions of recyclable items are placed in the wrong bin across the UK.

“By taking a little extra time to recycle correctly, residents can help save energy, reduce waste and ensure materials can be turned into new products rather than being lost to disposal.”

A recycling mascot called Deo, whose appearance is based on a deodorant can, will also visit community events during Recycle Week.

Cllr Les added:

“Residents across North Yorkshire already do a fantastic job recycling, but there is always more we can do.

“By putting the right items in the right bin, we can all play a part in reducing the amount of waste being thrown away and help to protect the environment.”
