New Skipton Ghost Cruise brings town's darker history to the canal

Youngsters will also receive a small bag of sweets on selected Halloween sailings.

A new ghost cruise exploring Skipton's darker history and folklore has launched on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

The Skipton Ghost Cruise is a collaboration between Skipton Boat Trips and Yorkshire Ghost Tours and is running throughout October aboard the Cobbydale.

The hour-long experience departs from Skipton's historic canal basin and features a professional character guide performing live throughout the journey.

Passengers will hear stories of local folklore, gruesome history and unexplained happenings, as well as tales about characters connected to Skipton and the surrounding area.

Organisers say the experience has already proved popular, with two of the initial Halloween sailings selling out within 48 hours of tickets going on sale.

James Watson of Skipton Boat Trips said:

“Skipton has so much history and character, and we wanted to create something that let people experience a completely different side of the town.

“Taking a ghost tour onto the canal felt like a brilliant way to combine local stories, live theatre and one of Skipton’s most recognisable attractions.

“The response has been fantastic.

"To see sailings selling out almost immediately has shown us there is a real appetite for unusual, experience-led things to do in Skipton.”

The Ghost Cruise has been designed to be atmospheric and entertaining rather than a full horror attraction, combining local history and theatre with dark Yorkshire humour.

Children can attend when accompanied by an adult, although parents are advised that some of the stories feature ghosts, death, crime and darker elements of local history.

Youngsters will also receive a small bag of sweets on selected Halloween sailings.

Tickets are priced at £17.95 for adults aged 13 and over and £13.95 for children aged between 1 and 12.

Cruises depart from Skipton Boat Trips on Coach Street.
