Skipton and Ripon MP Sir Julian Smith has called on North Yorkshire Council to review how businesses are consulted about road closures and restrictions.
Sir Julian said he has been contacted by businesses concerned about receiving little advance warning of nearby roadworks and the impact of unclear closure signs. Some businesses have reported signs giving customers the impression that they are inaccessible or closed, despite the actual road closure being further away. The MP has written to North Yorkshire Council Chief Executive Richard Flinton and Corporate Director of Environment Karl Battersby asking for its current arrangements to be reviewed. He wants businesses to be consulted earlier so their views can be considered before signs are put in place. Sir Julian said: “Several local businesses have contacted me with concerns about the impact of road closure signage. "Signs must clearly indicate when businesses remain open and accessible, so customers are not discouraged from visiting. “This is particularly important in rural areas that rely on visitor trade, where unclear signage can have a significant impact. “I recognise that North Yorkshire has the largest network of rural roads in the country and that maintaining them is vital. "However, those essential works should be accompanied by clear communication and sensible signage that minimises disruption to local businesses. “I have asked North Yorkshire Council to review its communications with businesses and ensure their views are taken into account before signage is put in place.” North Yorkshire Council currently provides an online map showing planned roadworks, closures and diversions, as well as an email alert service. The council also says alterations to signage can be considered where existing signs are misleading and causing confusion, or where changes would benefit commerce, industry or tourism.
