Long-running Skipton craft shop to close as owners retire

Spinning Jenny will close its physical store for the final time on Saturday 31st October.

A long-running Yorkshire craft business is set to close its Skipton shop as its owners announce their retirement.

Spinning Jenny will close its physical store for the final time on Saturday 31st October, bringing to an end five years under its current owners.

The business has a history dating back to the late 1960s and has previously been based in Hellifield and Grassington before making Skipton its home.

Announcing the news, the Spinning Jenny team said:

“After five wonderful years of running Spinning Jenny, the time has come for us to retire.

“Spinning Jenny has been part of Yorkshire's crafting community since the late 1960s, and we feel incredibly lucky to have been a small part of that long history, following in the footsteps of previous owners Jennifer Whitaker and Wendy Riley.”

The independent business specialises in yarn and needlework supplies and has built up a community of customers with an interest in knitting, sewing and other crafts.

The team said getting to know customers and becoming part of Skipton's independent business community had been among the highlights of their time running the shop.

They added:

“From our time in Hellifield and Grassington to our home here in Skipton, one of the greatest parts of running Spinning Jenny has been the people.

“We've loved being part of the local community, getting to know our customers, supporting fellow independent businesses and, of course, sharing our love of yarn, colour and creativity with so many of you.”

Although the physical shop is closing, Spinning Jenny's needlework collection will continue to be available online.

The team added:

“A big thank you to everyone who has walked through our doors, placed an order, recommended us to a friend, stopped for a chat, joined us at an event or supported our little independent business in any way.

“It has been a privilege to be part of the Skipton community, and we'll be leaving with five years of very happy memories.”
