Keighley’s new £5 million creative hub nears completion

Hanover Works is now nearing completion, with artists and organisations beginning to move into their new home.

A new multi-million-pound creative hub in the centre of Keighley is almost complete following a year-long transformation.

The top floor of the former Sunwin House department store has been redeveloped into Hanover Works, providing new facilities for artists, makers, community groups and education.

The project has received £2.6million through the Keighley Towns Fund, administered by Bradford Council, alongside £1.27million from the Community Ownership Fund.

A further £906,000 has been provided through Keighley College and £250,000 from Bradford 2025's Cultural Capital Fund.

The refurbished space includes 26 dedicated artists' studios, a street gallery frontage and flexible areas for performances and workshops.

Keighley College will also use Hanover Works to provide adult learning, digital training and skills courses.

Keighley Creative's team and studio holders are currently moving from their existing Cooke Lane base into the new facility.

The name Hanover Works is a reference to the site's history as the former Hanover Mill, with those behind the development hoping it will support Keighley's growing creative economy.

The lease for the building is held by East Street Arts, a Leeds-based artist-led charity which provides affordable workspaces, resources and professional support for artists.

Its involvement with the site dates back to 2016, when East Street Arts first opened the empty Sunwin House as temporary studio space for local artists.

Keighley Creative subsequently grew from the community established there.

In 2023, Bradford Council and Keighley Creative asked East Street Arts to support the redevelopment project, drawing on its experience of creating permanent spaces for artists, including Patrick Studios in Leeds.
