A former cancer patient has raised more than £11,000 to help improve comfort for people undergoing treatment at Airedale Hospital.
Megan was diagnosed with stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in September 2024 after initially experiencing persistent pain in her hip. The cancer was found to be affecting her hip, spine and shoulder, leading to six months of treatment at Airedale Hospital's Haematology & Oncology Day Unit (HODU). Megan underwent seven rounds of intensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy, with some treatment sessions lasting up to 12 hours. In April 2025, she received the all-clear and decided to raise money for Airedale Hospital & Community Charity as a way of thanking the team which had cared for her. A party for friends and family alongside a major walking challenge helped Megan raise more than £11,000. The money has helped fund five new reclining chairs for HODU, designed to make lengthy treatment sessions more comfortable for patients. Megan said: “During my time in HODU, I always felt that I wanted to give something back and help anyone who might find themselves going through a similar experience. “I spent so much time in the lounge with other patients that I knew how important it was to feel as comfortable as possible during those long days of treatment. “That’s why I decided to organise a fundraiser and take on a long walk to raise money for new, more comfortable chairs. "I wanted to make sure everyone receiving treatment at HODU could have a comfortable chair to sit in, particularly during those long hours. “I’m so incredibly proud and grateful that I was able to raise enough money for Airedale to order five new chairs for the treatment room. “I will be forever grateful to everyone at HODU for everything they did for me throughout one of the hardest periods of my life. “The staff were absolutely amazing, and the kindness, care and support they showed me will never be forgotten. HODU will always have a very special place in my heart.” Airedale Hospital & Community Charity has now used the money to purchase the new reclining chairs for the unit's lounge. Jodie Hearnshaw, Charity Manager at Airedale Hospital & Community Charity, said: “Megan’s story is incredibly inspiring. Not only has she overcome significant challenges during her treatment, but she has also chosen to give back in a way that will make a real difference for other patients. “Thanks to Megan’s determination, generosity and the support of everyone who donated, patients undergoing treatment at HODU will benefit from extra comfort during what can often be long and demanding appointments. “We are extremely grateful for her support.” Airedale Hospital & Community Charity raises money for projects, equipment and improvements across Airedale NHS Foundation Trust that go beyond standard NHS funding.
